Independent living communities are for adults, generally ages 55 and older, who don’t need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) but are looking for a living environment that offers additional support, onsite amenities and socializing opportunities and activities . ADLs, which include tasks relating to mobility, personal hygiene, eating and dressing, often serve as benchmarks for the level of care someone may need as they age. As people require more assistance with ADLs, they become less eligible for independent living environments and instead are better supported by communities that provide higher levels of care, such as Assisted Living and Adult Family Care Homes.
Memory care facilities are residential communities for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Dedicated memory care communities only accept residents with memory impairment, and every aspect of the community from activities to the facility layout is intentionally designed to benefit those with cognitive conditions. Additionally, memory care staff are specially trained to work with people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The specialized training is intended to keep residents both safe and happy and provide them with the highest possible quality of life.
Adult Family Care Home is a private residence that is licensed by Washington State to provide meals, housekeeping, and personal care services for those who require higher care assistance with their activities of daily living. Each home is licensed to have 6-8 resident to make it a close/home enviroment. Because care homes are significantly smaller than assisted living facilities, residents get more one-on-one attention. Though care homes employ fewer staff, they have more time to dedicate to each individual resident. It also reduces the chance of a health change or illness slipping through the cracks.
Assisted living facilities provide older adults with personal care assistance and assistance with the activities of daily living (ADLs). Residents of assisted living facilities (ALFs) can retain as much independence as they’re able while still receiving necessary assistance with personal care tasks such as laundry, meal preparation, and grooming. Most ALFs also offer opportunities for socialization and entertainment, such as planned activities and seminars. They also frequently have some on-site amenities such as a fitness center, beauty salon and formal dining rooms.
Seniors who need this high level of care are better suited for Adult Family Home Care. However, ALFs do assist residents with medication management, transportation to and from appointments, and first-aid and emergency care. Staff also remain on-site around-the-clock to assist residents during any emergency.
